As we cross the passes we gain mountain experiences with awesome views, winter snow, mountain vegetation, walking trails, and alpine microclimates. These crossings are high among mountain peaks and accesses some of New Zealand's most spectacular parts of the Alpine trails accessible by vehicles.

Engineers gain knowledge of road and rail building, bridges water control and trail blazing among the mountains. 

Geographers explore erosion, weather, mapping, trail making  

Biologists investigate alpine plants, forests and animals seeing how they adapt to the harsh variable conditions.

Meteorologists experience dramatic changes in high altitude temperatures, snow, formation, orographic effects, application of weather maps.
