Volcanoes are common in New Zealand. We find settlements around harbour volcanoes and others enjoying the rich soils they produce. Maori used them for observation posts to pre warn them of enemy attack against today's tourists. In the Active Volcano Zone tourism has developed because of the sights and the extensive geothermal activity. Studies help us understand the advantages, difficulties and risks of settling near volcanoes. We see and learn about the geographic formation of the volcanoes, see the many uses communities make for these and look at the risks involved in various locations
