Timaru Pop 35,000. Timaru is built on the remnants of ancient volcanic lava flows that offered the best available anchoring location for early shipping Whalers arrived first (1838). After (early 1900s), 28 ships were destroyed on the volcanic reefs a port was built. The community grew on farming and now services a large rural area and has its own port facilities for international shipping. CBD buildings are largely of Edwardian architecture. Shopping here is worthwhile - along with competitive prices, there are good opportunities to meet ordinary New Zealanders.
