New Zealand's
most devastating eruption (Mt Tarawera) killed over 150 people and
destroyed a village in 1886. A metre of hot, heavy ash collapsed roofs
and suffocated the inhabitants. We can view this
"buried village"
with many Maori homes and a tourist hotel.
Excellent
information displays and photographs all help you understand the causes and
results of this disaster.
