Mountain Beech - unique to temperate zone countries from Gondwanaland   

During walks among the high, weather lashed mountains we view many varieties of exquisite alpine plants.  There are thousands of varieties of mountain plants ranging from the smallest lichens to ancient giants carried from Gondwana.  Studies help us understand the methods and adaptations needed to survive in the violent changeable climate of the mountains. Of particular interest are the stories of the ancient beech forests and the parades of regeneration following the frequent catastrophic geographic events.  We familiarise ourselves with the different groups of mountain plants and discuss the methods they use to cope with the conditions.
