Mountain Beech Forests

Ancient dinosaur Beech Forests are found in patches all over new Zealand's mountains.  These ancient wonders were thriving on Gondwanaland during, and before, the reign of the giant dinosaurs.

Today we often see them in dinosaur movies. They featured Lord of the Rings and survived ice-ages and periods of global warming.

Studies
We observe unique adaptations that enable beech forests to thrive in violently changing environments.

Their life cycle and their special regeneration processes are of interest to biology groups. We look at both the  natural and human challenges that have recently reduced these great plantations.
