Giant snow capped mountains uplifting with the earths inner forces dominate the weather and the vegetation.  The violent "Roaring Forties" lash these alps depositing huge quantities of snow.

This impressive mountain range extends along the South Island reaching heights of 3700 mrtres and  forming a huge barrier between the east and west of the Island. They are constantly uplifting due tectonics and control the county's weather.
