NZ's Biggest river is fed by 3 the land's largest glacier lakes that rest beneath the Southern Alps. This giant weaves its path for 360 km from the desert lands to the Pacific Ocean in the Scottish Culture Zone. It was an access way for early Maori canoes and gold seeking steam boat travellers. Today it supports several colourful and historic communities that began life with the gold rush. Now the river supports 2 large Hydro Dams with plans to develop more. Mean discharge 614 cumecs
