Power began generating from here in the mid 1990s after a massive unexpected land stabilisation program.  

The new lake displaced the entire  1860s CBD of Cromwell, 280 people, 17 orchards and 6 farms while affecting 30 others. 

We see how this new lake dramatically transformed large river valley with its affects on industry, weather and population. 

Recreationists enjoy the desert lake mostly for fishing sailing and skiing. Surrounding vineyards and orchards now use its water for irrigation.
