In this zone we witness fast flowing rivers that sweep huge quantities of water and eroded, earthquake slips and fault line debris from the nearby Southern Alps.

Because rivers here flood frequently there excellent examples of control systems in place we can view and learn from. Rivers here are known still to destroy mines, farms, communities and roads as the land is steep broken and frequently deluged with rain.

Studies
These help us understand the ways rivers impact on societies. We examine causes, results and management of unwanted alluvial deposition, their role in accumulating of gold and their uses for harbours.
