Centres for higher education are usually embedded within cities.  These influence the culture of their communities

New Zealand has seven university embedded communities. These communities plus a number of others contain technical and specialist training institutions.

Sometimes settlements grew around their educational institution and they now play a large part in the wellbeing, architecture  and demographics of the community.
