Haast Past Highway  

At the highest places we encounter steep-sided, narrow gorges containing the raging river and changes to the forest compared to the lower altitudes.

In the southern part of the zone the road continues the entire length of the large Haast River as it follows a huge “U" shaped valley with waterfalls and hanging valleys along its length.  This magnificent Maori trail was used by early farmers before the modern road was built. Features include the World Heritage information centre, New Zealand's longest single lane bridge, exciting coasts, towering waterfalls, tectonic fault crossing,
