Whataroa and Hari Hari Carved into the beautiful rainforest beneath the towering Southern Alps, Whatora and Hari Hari developed as timber milling towns. We see only the remains of their milling factories as they were recently closed as a result of central government policies. Far from other centres we find what was once the community hospital and the police station. Here too are the severely declined schools. Lush productive dairy farms now support these struggling communities, that would have otherwise been decimated along with so many others. Nearby rare and graceful White Herons nest among fiery tale coastal rain-forested estuary. A visit their nests is available for groups.
