ShantytownThis zone has endured violent industrial upheavals, change and political conflicts. The people have become strongly protective, hard working, independent and resilient as a result of their past and environment.
We experience amazing communities that began with a massive gold rush and have since struggled against continual storms of change in this isolated remote and beautiful part of New Zealand. Groups learn to identify and understand how the various colourful communities can be so different. There are museums, old towns and derelict ghost towns to explore. PHOTOS
History
We pass by the trails and places stone age Maori people lived. We learn about deadly battles they fought over the precious land and gems they gathered. Then just 150 years ago we follow the arrival of tens of thousands of fortune seekers swarming from over the mountains and the oceans in their quest for gold . We see the ports, roads and some of the many hastily built settlements that began declining dramatically after 40 years when the gold became difficult to find. We follow the development and value if new primary industries including farming, timber milling, fishing and mining of coal with some jade. We follow their rises and declines with the associated effects on the various communities.
Studies
KANES take us the the most interesting places and help us gain a feel for life and business in this historic and torn region. We witness different lifestyles, housing, industries, retailing, schoolings, transportation and administration systems. Here we discover massive environmental changes caused by the settlers. We can examine the current industries, and recent political conflicts involving land use and ownership. We gain explanations for culture. We see new sustainable industries and policies striving to revitalise the remaining settlements. Visitors are encouraged to meet the locals to gain an understanding of the different evolving culture of the communities.
