Mining & Milling Zone

Gold Mining

This Zone began yielding its large gold reserves from the 1860s.  A huge rush transformed this land and the economy of the country.

Gold was found among the river deposits and old uplifted beaches. Towns and industries sprang into existence wherever gold was found.

Studies
Interested groups explore the movement of gold and the methods to easily and safely used to extract it.   Our
KANES guide and information facilities explain the origins of gold and how it grew into concentrations that made mining profitable.  We view a number of sights as time permits, have a go at panning ourselves and learn the art of sluicing.

We learn about gold's chemical and physical properties, its origins, uses and advantages. A visit to the working museum of Shantytown helps us understand the extraction processes. We see machines that extract gold from quartz and we explore the natural multi step processes that bought gold to the zone.
