The large stately Buller River passes flows through its deep picturesque forested sides  passing old ghost towns and dilapidated mines.  We see evidence of earthquake activity in the scarred hillsides and regenerating forest.  (The last major quakes were 1929 & 1968). Pre historic Maoris followed this gorge between its source lakes and ocean food supplies.
