This a remote isolated mountain region demands a special type of people to cope with the severe and difficult weather and conditions that are encountered in these areas. For about 800 years, early Maori used the trails and passes to travel in their quest for jade for trade. The early modern settlers (1860s) than used the trails to access their gold then later coal and timber. Two roads and a railway now allow modern vehicles fast access for produce and people.
