The Culture of the Maori
English Culture & Volcano Zone
Home Page

The two main cultures locally are generally described as "Maori" and "European".  These are clearly, vastly different, yet they are blending with one affecting the other. Understanding the Maori culture requires visits to different Zones.

The Maori culture is from the stone Age and it is being forced to change to meet the new modern aggressive European culture.  Its study is fascinating and enjoyable. This is a old proud, forceful, Stone Age culture and it is now being aligned with a modern Computer Age culture in just 3 generations.  There are many stresses involved.

Studies help us understand the reasons and causes of cultural differences so we can respect and learn from other cultures we may find around the world today.

Your
KANES guide will explain how the recently Stone Age Maori people are now simulating into the new modern Computer age. We discuss the social make up of the communities of the early times and look at the the difficulties and systems in place to diminish these.

We take a guided tour of the Canterbury Museum where we see excellent dioramas depicting the Stone Age Maori people before the Modern settlers arrived.   We view:- hunting techniques, cave life, housing, tools and tool making (from rocks), food, clothing, tools transport systems.
