groups receive an
exclusive lecture about living today on this amazing continent with
lectures
interactive displays, dioramas audiovisuals and actual experiences.
We meet the people
who know the continent and help us understand its attractions and
differences.
In just 1.5 hours you will gain an immense appreciation of this amazing
and most important continent, its wildlife, industries and

Studies:
This experience lets us understand what New Zealand used to be like during
the ice ages when glaciers were shaping the landscapes.
Studies Lecture
We take an exclusive lecture from an expert to
learn about the region overall. When time is available we may
experience some of the cold weather clothing as we learn about the
extremes of this huge continent.
We
learn about life in an Antarctic base, what it means to "winter over" we learn of the provisions needed for energy, industries,
transport, food, water, waste management, equipment etc.
Seasons of
the Antarctic
We experience an
ingenious display of
the changing seasons of summer and winter. This helps us understand the impact that
seasonal changes impose on all living creatures.
Blizzard
Adventure
Encounter -20deg.C (wind chill) snow and storm winds. Now you
know what it feel like when you
see these conditions on TV and movies. Discover the factors that create
these frequent storms.
Animal
Studies
Excellent AV's and live animal displays (live fish
and penguins) help you understand the physiology, science and geography that enable the animals to thrive
in extreme cold.
Special clothing
Learn how explorers keep warm
with -50degC temperatures.
You learn action science of heat
transfer and insulation.
Giant AV
They say photographs cannot really capture natures beauty but
this hi-tech,
movie presentation gets close. For 15 minutes enjoy a feast of superb images
covering nature, geography and settlements in this most unbelievable place on our earth .
Ice mobile ride
(usually optional)
See action
Science students see in action, the principals of flotation, weights and many engineering
features to consider in the cold environment.
Penguins
A large enclosure enables us to view these amazing animals both above the
water and beneath even there are glimpses into their burrows.
Settlement Studies
We explore the special ways we need to adapt normal facilities to cope with
the world's coldest and windiest environments.
Geography Studies
You learn to understand the causes and world wide ocean currents along with factors that support the theories of changes to
the land since Gondwanaland. Other geography studies can include, glaciation, pack ice,
Icebergs, geology, polar weather and meteorites.
Science Studies
Science students see many practical
applications of heat conservation studies. As mammals must maintain a high temperature to survive. The
hundreds of ways this is carried out by the many creatures there (including) humans will
keep students busy.
Weather Studies
We find out why Antarctica is the windiest, coldest, driest, continent
of the world.
MORE
Conservation
Studies
By looking at the history and the application of environmental controls you will
see the immense effort that has gone into protection of this vulnerable
landmass and you see why efforts are being made to conserve other
environments too.
Gift shop and
restaurant
Here you can purchase hot food and a good selection of Antarctic souvenirs.
Human History
share the lives of inspiring explorers at the
Canterbury
Museum.
